THE BEST HAIRSTYLES FOR SCUBA DIVING

Long hair and scuba diving...

Soooo… unless you’ve been living under the waves and had no communication with the outside world, the best hairstyles for scuba diving is a known and widely discussed topic. Your hair while diving can either be your best friend or mortal enemy. Our precious locks often get tangled up, snapped and broken, but we’re here to help! We’re going to share with you some of our best tips for keeping your hair in pristine condition whilst doing what you love most!

Here's the best hairstyles for scuba diving that will ensure you don't have to worry about post-scuba locks!!!

Double Braids

Firstly, we've got the double braids, probably the most worn hairstyle for divers with long hair! You're destined to swim into the double braids on a dive! The only issue can be if you've got a fringe. If you've got a fringe, take some clips and clip them in under the braid and BANG, no issues!

Ponytail and Braid

We've then got the ponytail and braid. Gather your hair into a ponytail either above or below your mask and braid the excess hair. It is also an option to roll this braid up into a bun. Alternatively, you could make 2 ponytails and braid that hair! All will keep the hair out of your face, untangled and in its best scuba condition!

Banded Ponytail

Another hairstyle that seems to be pricking our ears up lately is using elasticated bands to tie one approximately 3-4 cm from the other for the length of your hair. You can either do this from a ponytail or by gathering hair as you would a braid i.e. working from the roots to the ends.

Hair hacks to go alongside your scuba hairstyle

Wearing a hood

Wearing a hood acts as a barrier between your hair and the ocean, therefore prevents tangling. Follow the hairstyles above and accompany with a hood and you will have no tangling or breakage issues.

Invest in a slap strap

If you're not wearing a hood, your hair may experience some tangling in your mask accompanied by some of your hair ripping out as you take your mask off! We’ve all been there! This is easily solved by switching to a neoprene mask strap. Neoprene will provide more comfort and ease during your dive and as you take your mask off.

Leave-in conditioner

Finally, a  popular hack within the dive community is using a leave-in conditioner or oil to moisturise the hair pre-dive. Apply a generous amount to your locks, specifically the ends and style as desired using the hairstyles above. This will act as a barrier between your hair and the saltwater! We suggest using a reef-safe conditioner or coconut oil as they’re biodegradable. Keeping your hair and the fish happy 🙂 Stream2Sea is a popular, tried and tested brand available from The Honest Diver.
