PADI Advanced Open Water Course

EYEMOUTH

Bank Holiday Weekend 24th - 27th August 2019

THE TRIP: PROTECT WHAT YOU LOVE EXPERIENCE

Join us for a weekend based in the beautiful Eyemouth and St Abbs marine reserve. We'll be conducting the PADI Advanced Open Water Course with an environmental twist! We'll teach you how to use your diving skills to help protect the ocean through responsible diving practices and attitudes.

Divers attitudes toward their underwater environment is crucial to protecting our oceans and freshwater systems. As a dive centre, we're proud to be a "no-touch, no-take" operation when it comes to marine life and a "take as much as you can!" operation when it comes to marine debris! You'll complete the Project AWARE Specialty Course where we'll discuss the unique position and responsibilities we hold as divers to protect what we love using our skills.

Being in control underwater is the most important tool in your ocean protection skillset. You'll take the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Course to fine tune your weighting, hovering, propulsion and trim. This will come in particularly useful when diving the protected reefs and wrecks in the Eyemouth and St Abbs reserve, and for picking up those hard to reach pieces of marine debris.

We always remove every piece of litter we see underwater. But that's just the start of the process - we also report our findings to Project AWARE to fuel data sets and provide evidence that can change policies worldwide. You'll take the Dive Against Debris Specialty Course which teaches you all about the messy problem of marine debris and what scuba divers can do to help. You'll conduct your very own Dive Against Debris surveys where you'll remove trash from the ocean then weigh, record and report your findings.

Our Goals

The Advanced Course is all about extending your diving range and trying out new things. After the course you'll be qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters and have more experience under your belt. Our PADI Instructors are passionate about diving and would love to take you on some awesome Adventure Dives in one of our favourite parts of the world - Eyemouth and St Abbs.

During this long weekend away, we're going to equip you with a very special skill set that not only advances your diving capabilities, but also allows you to protect the ocean. And the fun doesn't stop once you get out of the water, we'll also be doing beach cleans and environmental presentations.

Our Values & The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course

  • OCEAN HEALTH: Keep Our Sea Trash Free

    • We are the only dive centre in the UK who teach our Advanced Open Water students the PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty as part of their course.
    • Every dive we do is a Dive Against Debris. We will teach you the importance of using your scuba diving skills in the battle against marine debris and how to conduct your own Dive Against Debris surveys.
    • Beach cleans help keep our oceans trash free by removing litter before it gets a chance to enter the water.
  • MARINE LIFE: Protect What You Love

    • You will learn how you can use your diving skills to help protect the ocean.
    • We focus on buoyancy and trim a lot in our courses - way beyond the requirements. You'll take the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Course during the weekend to become a buoyancy expert.
    • You'll learn all about the pressures our underwater environments face and how scuba divers can use their skills to protect them during the Project AWARE Specialty Course.
  • PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY: Leading The Way

    • As a Dive Against Debris diver you are a qualified citizen scientist. You can raise awareness and contribute evidence that directly changes local, regional and global policies.
    • We are a PADI Approved Youth Training Centre which means we are specialists in teaching kids how to scuba dive. We've got equipment specifically for youngsters to keep them comfortable and warm.
    • We remove the barriers that many individuals experience when walking into UK dive centres. There is no macho attitude at The Fifth Point. We're a friendly bunch who will make you feel welcome as soon as you step foot in the door.
  • HEALING AND WELLNESS: Let's Go Diving

    • We help divers achieve their goals.
    • We value all our customers and strive to give the best customer service you've ever experienced
    • You'll meet loads of like minded people during your Advanced course and get the opportunity to spend time away with friends.

We're A PADI 5* Dive Centre

We are subject to PADI’s quality assurance program. This is a globally acclaimed and fully integrated approach to ensure PADI standards are maintained throughout all elements of all courses. You can rest assured that we go above and beyond the requirements of PADI.

Our Protect What You Love Experience consists of three main phases:

  • Confined Water Dives
  • Open Water Dives
  • Knowledge Development

Confined Water Sessions

You'll complete 2 Buoyancy and Trim Workshops before you head up to Eyemouth for the weekend. They're actually not required by PADI, we've added them in as a bonus to help develop and fine tune your skills before heading to Open Water.

Open Water Sessions

You'll complete 6 dives in Open Water over the course of the weekend. They'll include shore dives, night dives and boat dives.

You'll complete:

  • Deep
  • Navigation
  • Dive Against Debris
  • Night
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy part 1
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy part 2

Knowledge Development

For The Advanced Course:

You'll work through your Knowledge Development for the Advanced Course in your own time using the awesome PADI eLearning app. It's really interactive with sections to read and videos to watch. You'll complete the chapters that relate to the dives we'll be doing over the weekend as well as the "Think Like A Diver" section. At the end of each chapter you'll complete a Knowledge Review.

Once the eLearning is complete, you'll take a Quick Review during at some point during the weekend and we can fill in any knowledge gaps as needed.

For The Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty:

This course doesn't have an electronic manual (yet!) so we'll be giving you a good old fashioned paper book so you can read and complete the knowledge reviews before the trip. We'll go through the answers at some point during the weekend.

For The Dive Against Debris Specialty:

Nic will give a presentation on the messy problem of marine debris while we're away. You can work through your knowledge reviews as you go and discuss the answers.

For The Project AWARE Specialty:

Nic will give a presentation on the 10 Tips for divers to protect the ocean. You can work through your knowledge reviews as you go and discuss the answers.
