Our Values & The PADI Open Water Diver Course

  • OCEAN HEALTH: Keep Our Sea Trash Free

    • Every dive we do is a Dive Against Debris. You will see your instructors pick up every piece of trash they come across, and you can help too!
  • MARINE LIFE: Protect What You Love

    • We are the only dive centre in the UK who teach Open Water Diver students the Project AWARE Specialty as part of their course.
    • You will learn how you can use your diving skills to help protect the ocean.
    • We focus on buoyancy and trim a lot in our courses - way beyond the requirements. This fundamental skill takes time to master, but by the time you're ready to dive off the Northumberland Coast, you will be a buoyancy expert! You will be confident, competent and safe while also protecting the environment.
  • PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY: Leading The Way

    • We are a PADI Approved Youth Training Centre which means we are specialists in teaching kids how to scuba dive. We've got equipment specifically for youngsters to keep them comfortable and warm.
    • We remove the barriers that many individuals experience when walking into UK dive centres. There is no macho attitude at The Fifth Point. We're a friendly bunch who will make you feel welcome as soon as you step foot in the door.
  • HEALING AND WELLNESS: Let's Go Diving

    • We help divers achieve their goals.
    • We value all our customers and strive to give the best customer service you've ever experienced
    • Once qualified, you'll be able to join us on all our dives and environmental activities.

We're A PADI 5* Dive Centre

We are subject to PADI’s quality assurance program. This is a globally acclaimed and fully integrated approach to ensure PADI standards are maintained throughout all elements of all courses. You can rest assured that we go above and beyond the requirements of PADI.

The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of four main phases:

  • Knowledge Development
  • Confined Water Dives
  • Water Skills Assessment
  • Open Water Dives

Knowledge Development

You'll work through your Knowledge Development in your own time using the awesome PADI eLearning app. There's an Introduction followed by 5 chapters. It's really interactive with sections to read and videos to watch. At the end of each chapter you'll complete a Knowledge Review. At the end of Chapter 5, you'll complete the final exam. Once the eLearning is complete, you'll take a Quick Review during one of your sessions and we can fill in any knowledge gaps.

Confined Water Sessions

You'll complete a total of 5 Confined Water Sessions where you'll learn the basics of scuba diving and build your confidence. 4 Confined Water Sessions take place in our onsite Training Tank. Some people need a little bit more time, and that's fine by us! If you need more sessions, we can arrange your schedule to suit. You'll also complete a Confined Water Session in a bigger swimming pool where we can stretch our legs.

Water Skills Assesment

At some point during the course, you'll need to prive that you've got basic water skills. You'll swim freestyle non-stop for 200m (or with mask, fins and snorkel for 300m) and float in water too deep to stand for 10 minutes.

Open Water Sessions

Depending on the experience you choose, you'll complete at least 4 dives in Open Water. We regularly visit cracking local dive sites including Collywell Bay, St Mary's Island and Beadnell. We also venture further up north for some stunning dives in Eyemouth. We try to dive in the ocean whenever possible. However, if the weather turns and sea diving is not an option, we'll head to some cool lakes and quarries inland instead.

Project AWARE Specialty

We'll arrange a chilled out evening with snacks and drinks where we'll work through this program. We'll discuss the pressures faced by underwater environments and what you as a scuba diver can do to help.

PADI Dry Suit Specialty

If you choose the Ocean Protector or Ocean Hero Experience, you'll learn how to dive in a dry suit. The first few Confined Water Sessions of the Open Water Course will be completed in a wet suit. As soon as you're ready, we'll add in an extra session and teach  you the basics of Dry Suit diving. You'll then use this for the remainder of your course and practise your skills. You'll earn your Dry Suit Certification during Dive 4 of the Open Water Course and the additional dive in the experience package. You'll also complete eLearning for the Dry Suit theory including Knowledge Reviews.

PADI Boat Diver Specialty

If you choose the Ocean Hero Experience you'll get the awesome opportunity to dive on our monthly boat trip at either The Farne Islands or St Abbs Marine Park. During this 2 dive trip, you will earn your PADI Boat Diver Specialty certification. You'll expand your knowledge about boat terminology, boat diving etiquette and safety procedures while diving in some world renowned locations. If you're really lucky, you might spot the elusive wolf fish or the seals might come to play! This course is not yet available for eLearning, so you'll receive a good old fashioned paper manual to read through and complete your Knowledge Reviews.

What are the prerequisites for this course?

To enrol on the PADI Open Water Diver course, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 10 years of age
  • You must have adequate swimming skills
  • You must be in good physical health
  • No prior scuba diving experience is required

You will also be required to complete:

You Tell Us When You Want To Start

There are no start dates for this course, it's completely flexible - you tell us when you want to start and we'll sort everything out for you! You can even book your first session online and we'll arrange the rest of your schedule when we see you.

Arranging Your Other Sessions

eLearning

As soon as you've paid your course deposit, we'll assign your eLearning theory to you. PADI will send you an email with links to register and download your eLearning plus all the forms you need to fill in for the course. This means you can get cracking straight away and continue to work through the chapters at times to suit you.

Confined Water Sessions

When we see you for your first session, we'll sit down and plan the rest of your schedule. You'll complete at least 4 sessions in our Training Tank - more if you think you need it! We can jump in any time that suits you. This includes weekday, week night and weekend slots.

You'll also take a dive in the big pool as part of your Open Water Course. Our swimming pool sessions are held at Astley Community High School, usually on a Wednesday night from 7.15pm. If this doesn't fit in with your plan, no worries - we'll schedule something special just for you!

Project AWARE Specialty Course

You can choose the date you'd like to complete your Project AWARE Specialty course. We hold regular evenings where we chill with drinks and nibbles and work through the program.

Open Water Sessions

We're out an about diving every weekend and you're more than welcome to join us! If you're not available during weekends, don't worry - we'll arrange special week day dives just for you! We try our very best to dive as much as possible. Obviously, in this game, we're at the mercy of the weather. Should our plans change, we'll let you know with as much notice as possible. If the conditions don't let us dive in the sea then we'll head to some inland lakes and quarries instead. Please note that there are sometimes membership and/or entry fees to pay at these sites. These are the only costs not included in your course.

Payment Plans

We can arrange payment plans to make budgeting your PADI Open Water Course even easier. After your initial deposit of £100.00, we can arrange weekly or monthly plans to split the cost of your course.
